It’s fair to say that doing the ‘shopping research’ in New York City was exhausting. Lauren and I took the task very seriously, and have summarised our favourite ‘exhausting’ experiences here.
1. MACY’s: because it is simply AMAZING! It’s not only the world’s largest department store, occupying almost the entire block bounded by 7th Avenue on the west, Broadway on the east, 34th Street on the south and 35th Street on the north. As Lauren points out in the novel, it’s almost bigger than the main drag in her hometown Goulburn. Inside the store was spacious, and it reminded us both of David Jones. Macy’s has absolutely everything: from lingerie to luggage, cameras to cakes. Both Lauren and I simply stopped still when went to the lingerie department, there must have been 3000 pairs of knickers to choose from. “There’s got to be at least one lucky pair of undies in there somewhere!” Lauren joked to me.
2. 5th Avenue: Yes ladies, this is where you want to spend your days strolling. Even without the budget to buy, we had to ‘research’ the stretch from Central Park up the Times Square. Check out Bergdorf Goodman, Brooks Brothers, Givenchy, Cartier, Saks and, of course, our favourite place, Tiffany’s. If you buy only one thing in New York it must be from here. It’s hard not to feel like Audrey Hepburn strolling in the doors. It’s hard work taking in these fabulous places, so if you’re feeling a bit dry from pounding the pavement, drop into Trump Tower along the way for a cocktail.
3. Century 21: this designer department store is known as the worst kept secret in New York. The fact that it’s listed in Lonely Planet doesn’t help. Lauren and I had a ball there, buying hats, scarves, suits, dresses, makeup, perfume, handbags, and of course, another suitcase each. Get the train to Downtown and you’ll never set foot in another DFO in your life, truly.
4. SoHo and Broadway: We found some of our best shopping buys simply roaming the streets of SoHo and along Broadway. Anne Klein shoes at bargain prices, dresses from Banana Republic, jewellery from street markets, and then when our feet were sore we stopped into Bloomingdales, sat at the Clarins counter and chatted to the sales rep who made up our eyes. It was fun.
